Sirius had gotten up around eleven thirty. It was quite a long night thanks to James, and he was exhausted. He had finally realized what time it was and knew he was so late for multiple classes. Or did he not have classes today, he could not remember. This was all James' fault thanks to me showing him the way to the kitchen. He was having relationship problems like usual and suddenly got an addiction to fire whiskey. Which didn't agree with Sirius' stomach very well.
He decided to walk over to James' bed and see how he was doing. Sirius got to his bed to only realize he was gone. Where could he be? No wait scratch that how is he up already? he thought. Sirius grabbed his jacket and a pair of sunglasses and headed out to the staircase. He believed that most likely James would be on the grounds. But he was wrong, because as he approached the entrance hall the yelling came into hearing distance. Sirius recognized the voices and it was definitely James and Lily. Oh gods here we go! Sirius to the rescue! he thought.
The scene looked intense. Lily had James backed against the wall and she was leaning head forward beat red and poking him in the shoulder. He walked towards them and slid in between them. "Why so serious?" he asked. Lily paused for a moment and then began yelling again. "Oh gods keep it down, my head!" Sirius exclaimed. He pulled out his wand and pointed it towards Lily. "Rictusempra" he mumbled as he was getting dizzy from the yelling and took a seat on a bench that had a view of the two of them.

"It was only a mild, and politely worded, suggestion, Evans. I don't see the need to have a nervy b every five seconds like you do. I'm sorry I plucked a nerve." James grimaced at her, his arms crossed over his almost broad chest. He remembered when he was younger and horribly scrawny. Lily was about his size then, but now he was bigger and when they fought it made him feel better, somehow. But Lily was wittier than he was and it showed.
"Oh? Polite? As I recall it was the same fight as usual, 'Snape is a slimy git, Evans. You can't leave this common room, Evans.' Why don't you just stuff it for once and realize that Severus is a much better human than you are? He doesn't attempt to tell me what I can and cannot do, thank you very much." Lily's green eyes glinted dangerously and somewhere in the middle of their argument she backed him into the wall and began poking him in the shoulder harshly.
James' mouth turned into a tight white line, he was surprised she didn't feel is anger coming off of him in waves. But if she did he didn't find out. Instead he was interrupted (read: saved) by his best-friend. Though it seemed that he might need the saving in the end as Lily took a deep breath and started to take her aggression out of Sirius instead.
Lily's face was turning redder, if that were even possible. James was about to step in and do...something, but Sirius was on top of it. Granted he was usually on top of everything...Lily fell to the ground laughing uncontrollably. After several seconds she was laughing so much that she hardly made noise anymore, tears streamed down her face.
"Umm, Sirius...don't you think you should make it stop?" James glanced at his friend sitting on the bench and looking like complete hell. Instead James pulled his wand out and pointed it at Lily, "Finite Incantatem." The spell stopped immediately, though Lily didn't get up off the ground.
Now James felt bad. Really, really bad, actually. He did love and pine for Lily Evans, after all. Which was the whole reason he hated Snape which was how the fight started. This was, in effect, his fault. Most things seemed to be. "Are you all right, Lily?" James bent down, grabbed her under the arms, and lifted her to her feet. Her whole body was shuddering a little, the aftershocks of laughter.
James placed her in a chair then sat by Sirius, watching Lily. His hand was wrapped around his chin half covering his mouth, like he usually did when he wasn't messing up his hair. Unlike the hair messing this body sign was involuntary and unplanned. A minute later Lily stood up and slammed off to the Girls' Dorm.
James sighed heavily and pivoted to face Sirius, "What was that all about? Did last night not work well with Mr. Black? Odd since you're supposed to be the drinker in the group." He grinned at Sirius and clapped him on the shoulder. "Want to head down to the Kitchens and have the house elves work something out for you? They're pretty good at your common potions. Especially when one doesn't want to go see the Madam Nurse."

Sirius was dreading the thought of going back to the kitchen. But maybe James was right, and the elves could probably come up with something. He stood up and waited for James and then began walking towards the kitchen. "There should be a spell for this James, we should have Lupin look into it. ...So you're not going to start drinking again are you?" he said.
Sirius could see the painting now, and suddenly had a thought.. "Who do you think came up with this painting and the secret passage? Honestly, was there some fat student that wanted a midnight snack without getting caught! Also what is with tickling the pear? I find that a bit weird and uncomfortable," he said. James and Sirius had finally reached the painting. Sirius looked towards James and pointed towards the pear. "Don't worry pear it's only James!" he said aloud.
As they entered the kitchen something wasn't right. There was no cooking, or noise, or odd smell, not even any elves for that matter. There was still fire whiskey bottles every where. "Something is definitely wrong with this picture, James," Sirius said. Then Sirius noticed a cat sitting towards the back corner of the kitchen watching them. "James.... slowly back out the door," he whispered.

James shrugged absently following Sirius down to the dungeons. No, he wasn't going to start drinking again. At least not this early. Maybe later on tonight since it was a Saturday and that was what did on the weekend. He couldn't even remember when he had thought up the idea of partying every Saturday night. Or had Sirius thought it up? It seemed like they shared ideas so often he wasn't even sure whose idea it was. "If there is a spell Moony would know it. That guy knows everything." Which was why James liked Remus so much. There were other reasons, but his infinite knowledge seemed most important.
"And I probably won't start drinking again. But you know just as well as I do that it's pretty hard to say no to a house elf." The little buggers were very convincing. Course anyone would give in if asked enough times. James shook his head and snorted out a laugh, "Maybe this addition was added when Sluggy started to multiply." He smirked a little and reached out to tickle the yellowy-green pear. It shuddered a little and then the painting swung open to reveal a nicely shaped arch in the wall. James was still thinking about Slughorn, their obese potions master, ever being skinny when Sirius suddenly stopped right in front of him.
"What are you going on about?" He asked then glanced around the kitchens. The place was still a mess. There was nothing moving. There was no cooking being done. Well, for once Sirius was right, there was something funny going on. And then he spotted the cat sitting across the kitchen. James raised an eyebrow, pushed Sirius out of the way, and took several steps closer.
By the time he realized what was going on it was far too late. A second after he spotted the markings around the cat's eyes it changed back into a...person. And not just any person, McGonagall. This was going to be a very bad morning. "Bollocks!" He shouted then spun around on his heel and made a dash in the opposite direction, "Come on Padfoot, don't just stand there and let her get you." They couldn't get away from her entirely, but they could certainly put off their punishment.
Sirius and James knew a lot more about the secret passages than McGonagall did. They had just finished their ingenious map of the castle a few days ago, too. While running back up the stairs to the Entrance Hall James quickly scanned his brain for the nearest passage...unfortunately the closest one was on the Third Floor, the hump-backed witch. And even if they made it that far they'd be stuck in the passage or Honeydukes' cellar for several hours. This was definitely not good.

Sirius told James to back out of the kitchen but he didn't listen. Instead he decided to take a closer look. Which brought them to their current situation. They were now on the run from 'her.' Her being Professor McGonagall. She was that last person you wanted to run into when doing something you shouldn't be doing. Especially if you were Sirius and James.
Sirius and James were on the third floor with only two choices. Either go through the passage to Honeyduke's and wait until they eventually got caught or just give up. But giving up wasn't be there style."Well I guess we don't have a choice James. Let's go!" Sirius opened the passage and began to run. As he reached Honeyduke's he turned towards the tunnel. "Where's James? I swear that boy must be getting fat. He's getting so slow." Sirius muttered then he heard footsteps approaching from the tunnel.
"About time James! What took so long?" Sirius stood facing the opposite way waiting for an answer.

Somehow, inexplicably, Sirius passed James up. Dammit! he shouted in his head. This was, basically, how the order of their little group stacked up: Remus was the smartest and the least likely to get in trouble. Then there was James, who was smart as well, but rather enjoyed using it for...bad means. Sirius was smart-ish. Not as smart as James or Remus, but not a moron. However, he was more likely to cause some kind of problem. And then Peter was...Peter. Not a genius, not an idiot, not likely to think up a good prank, but wouldn't back down from one if he was needed.
In any case, James was being left behind and Sirius was getting off scott-free. For a second James just stood there and watched Sirius scoot off to the the Third Floor like a complete mad man. And then, at the sight of a cat, James took off at a run again. But it was too late.
Immobulus! McGonagall shouted. She must have transformed back into herself again. There was no deny it, she was damned fast as a cat. James stopped in his tracks, almost frozen. His legs wouldn't move no matter how hard he tried. When McGonagall approached him he stopped trying.
"Professor," James said in a scolding voice, "Using magic on a student? Twenty points from Gryffindor to be sure." Yeah, it probably wasn't wise to egg her on...but he was James Potter. At least he hadn't hit on her. If he was Sirius he would have complimented her bottle green robes and striking hat. Or, perhaps, said that her black hair looked fantastic in that skin stretching bun.
"Indeed, Mr. Potter." She said gravely. "Now, where is Mr. Black? The boy can't be far..." James just shrugged. McGonagall gave him a stony look then started in the direction James had been going. "Don't move Mr. Potter. I'll be back for you... Oh, wait, you can't move, can you?" If McGonagall smiled she would have been grinning wildly right then. Except she rarely smiled.
McGonagall transformed into a cat once more and took off down the Third Floor corridor. It just so happened that Sirius hadn't had a huge head start and she watched him slip behind the witch. And as a cat she was quick enough to follow right behind him.
"James is a little incapacitated right now, Mr. Black." McGonagall said from behind him, "Let's go back to my office, shall we? We can pick Mr. Potter. up along the way."

Lydia sat on the desk in an empty classroom, focusing intently on a basket in front of her. She had actually gotten a bad grade in Charms and she couldn't figure out why. She had done everything right, even preformed the spell perfectly. Maybe it was when she had hit that other student in the head with the pillow. It wasn't on purpose; not completely at least. He deserved it at least, making fun of her for no good reason. Now she couldn't focus on anything other than getting her grade back up.
A thundering in the halls distracted her from her minor depression. Someone was running past - no, two someones. Now the one had been stopped by a spell and she could hear McGonagall's voice. Oh, whoever was out there was in big trouble. Even without knowing who it was or what they had done she felt sorry for them. She didn't make a habit of getting caught while doing what she wasn't supposed to, but every student here knew how stern that particular Professor could be.
When the voices stopped she eased the door open and looked out into the hall. Of course it was Potter. Either he or his annoying friend were almost always at the root of trouble in the school. Casting a careful glance at the fleeting back of the cat she stepped out, dodging a squeaky floorboard. As she hadn't done anything wrong, there really wasn't a reason to be so careful, but she was taking no chances. A cross McGonagall could find something wrong with anything.
"Look who got caught," she said quietly, keeping her voice low enough that the Professor wouldn't be able to hear it. Her steps took her closer to James and she stopped beside him. "I'm going to assume she is going off to catch your other half," she stated, more to herself than him. Now she was faced with a problem. If she didn't help him she'd probably feel bad. If she did, she'd have to help Sirius too or feel bad in the end. But what if she got caught? There was no way she was getting in trouble for these two. Not on a Saturday.
"Don't move," she muttered under her breath, pulling out her wand and aiming it at James. He shouldn't have anything to worry about; she was very good at spells. Most of the time. "Finite Incantatem." She was almost completely sure that would work. She had never been forced to counter a Professors spell before.
Not even bothering to make sure it had worked, she started backing up toward on of the classrooms - Defense against the Dark Arts, to be exact. "Don't move yet," she hissed under her breath, opening the door completely behind her and ducking in. She was going to regret doing this, but maybe it would be fun. That, and these two were going to owe her. Oh the cruel ways she could imagine making them repay her. The thought alone made her smile.
The cage of Pixie's sat in the middle of the room, completely unprotected. It was far too easy. In a moment her cat darted into the room and the stage was set. "Sorry about this, Boo," she whispered, then grabbed the cage and pulled it off the table onto the floor. The door burst open and 4 or 5 Pixies escaped before she reclosed the door. All of them darted out of the room, quickly followed by her black cat. This could be very easy.
"Bella, no!" she yelled, running out into the hall in time to see her cat disappear up the steps to the fourth floor. One Pixie remained on the third floor, pulling stuff off the shelves and knocking things over. Maybe she hadn't thought this out completely. Well, too late for second guessing. She moved quickly down the hall, stopping near Professor McGonagall and Sirius.
"Professor, I need help! My cat knocked over the cage and the Pixie's flew out and I closed the cage door but they flew out of the room and went upstairs and I'm not that fast and now they're going to hurt Bella!" she said very quickly, the words piling out onto each other. Her eyes were wide with fear and tearing up slightly. She wasn't really that concerned as her cat would never manage to get that close to the Pixie's, but she certainly was a good actress. Now McGonagall just had to buy it. Either way she couldn't just leave Pixie's flying around the school.

Sirius had stopped breathing at some point. Very slowly he turned to face the bane of his existence...or one of the many since every professor was the bane of existence. School would be so much better sans professors. He might even enjoy classes when there was no one there to teach them.
"Minnie! You look fantastic today, my dear," he finally said in a very silky voice. McGonagall was used to Sirius saying things of this nature, but she never got over the use of a childhood nickname. Sirius Black had no right to call her anything but professor.
Minerva was not going to rise to the bait today. No, she had had enough of Black and Potter's antics. She knew all about the previous night and it was about time those two got what they needed: some stone cold discipline. She would have to speak with Mr. Lupin about using his Prefect status to keep them in line...again. "Yes, yes, very well Mr. Black. Let's go." McGonagall turned and left the passage way. Sirius followed reluctantly. Perhaps he cold find a way to save himself, but James was busted and Sirius wasn't going to let Prongs take all of the punishment.
Of course it was when the two were out in the hallway when fate intervened. Sirius had always loved fate and the current vessel of said fate was a girl, a pretty girl. All the better, he thought and grinned wryly. People thought that James was the catch and when they discovered he rarely dated half the population went elsewhere. And elsewhere was Sirius...of course, it was also better than James. Or he thought so. Atleast if they dated Sirius there was a small chance they could have a relationship. With James there was no chance, what with him loving Lily for no reason.
Sirius's grin widened as the girl rambled about pixies. It was a lie, it had to be...but wait. A sound of wings was coming up the hall and they were coming fast. McGonagall's look of suspicion gave way to one of complete weariness. "I shall see you in my office, Mr. Black." And then she was off and running after the pixies, her wand in her hand and spells flying everywhere.
"Hey..." Sirius began, "That was pretty cool. Did your cat really do it or did you do it on purpose?" He was still grinning from ear to ear. After a second he reached out, grabbed Lydia's hand, and brought it to his mouth to kiss it, "I'm Sirius Black." He stated simply and let her hand go, "And you're in my house and in my year. Rose, right?" He couldn't remember her first name, but he knew the surname. James would know her first name, he always knew things like that.
"Have you saved Potter or is that our next stop?" Sirius started off down the hall to where he had last seen James.

James was waiting for the professor to return when a girl appeared before him. He actually knew her name. Lydia Rose, fifth year, Gryffindor. He knew most of the females in his year and house. It was one of James's things, he could hear someone's name once and remember it. This was why he did well in school without much effort. He had a damned good memory. But Lydia was mocking him. James pulled a face at her and stayed stock still. He had little choice in the matter, after all.
Course he had the urge to run away when she raised her bleeding wand and pointed it at him. Maybe she was going to take this chance to curse him into oblivion. Had he pissed her off before? James didn't think he had...but you never knew. He tended to piss people off without really meaning to. Or one of his mates had done it and, in a girl's mind, one guy was as good as another when you were out for blood. If this was Sirius's fault James was going to kick his arse from here to China. He promised himself that.
Much to James's surprise she didn't curse him. She released him from McGonagall's crap spell. "Excellent," James said under his breath with a smile and wiggled his arms kind of like a chicken. 'Don't move yet,' Lydia hissed at him and James frowned. "Are you kidding me? I just got free and Sirius is off hiding in--" He stopped before he gave away one of their secret entrances. James cleared his throat, "What I mean is--" Lydia backed into a classroom and James shook his head.
Girls were freaking insane. What good was Defense Against the Dark Arts going to be in a moment like this? James leaned to the right and looked inside the room. When he realized what Lydia intended to do his eyes got wide, though he looked half way impressed. It was a good idea. He was damned surprised that she intended to follow through with it, too.
James pulled his head back and scooted over toward the wall, giving the Pixies a wide enough berth that he, hoped, they would ignore him completely. As one pixie passed it stuck it's tongue out at James who returned the gesture. He waited a few seconds until he heard Lydia telling McGonagall what had happened and then started off down the hall way.
"I'm fine, thanks." James replied rather coolly to Sirius, "I mean, this is all your bloody fault." It wasn't. It was the exact opposite, actually.
"But that's neither here nor there," James said quickly before Sirius could utter a response, "We need to do something special for Lydia here. She did save our lame arses, after all." James grinned at Lydia in a nice, friendly way. He was taking the high road rather than the man-whore road that Sirius had taken...and probably always would.
James checked his watch then nodded slowly, "Why don't we go to Honeyduke's? I'll buy you whatever you want, Lyd. Least I can do..." James tilted his head in what he thought was a very sweet and convincing way. How could someone refuse candy? They couldn't, simple as that.

Lydia waited for McGonagall to take the bait and disappear before blinking the tears from her eyes and smiling. Somehow she hadn't expected it to be that easy. Maybe she'd have to pull the whole "sweet innocent teenage girl" thing more often. It might even get her out of that bad mark she got in Charms. The possibilities were becoming endless.
Someone speaking to her snapped her out of her day dream. Of course it was Sirius; he was the only one close enough to speak to her. That fact didn't stop her from being shocked when he took her hand and kissed it. Such a gesture was strange enough that she forgot that she should pull her hand out of his grasp until he had already dropped it. Attention from the various guys of the school wasn't something she was entirely foreign to, but most of them were jerks from the start and she didn't have a reputation as one to pity jerks.
Remaining quiet as he introduced himself, She allowed herself time to study him. She had made sure to never be this close to him before, but now she could see why quite a few of the other girls were constantly fawning over him. He wasn't too bad looking and was definately smooth. And those eyes! She was almost going to have to rip her brain to shreds to get the image of them out of her head. Thankfully she could still say he had no effect on her. Okay, so barely any effect.
Shaking her head slowly, she walked beside him when he started moving. Before she could reply, however, James showed up and sounded a little upset. "It would seem all is not perfect in couples land," she stated, smiling to herself. The two did spend more time together than any couple she had met so far. Besides, it was just a joke.
Lydia's eyes grew wide at the offer. Anything she wanted? If he had said Zonko's he'd be stuck buying the whole store. Well, candy was a great second best. One could never have too many sweets, as one of the owners of Honeyduke's had once told her.
"I'd love to be able to lie and say that saving you two damsels was enough for me, but I'd be a fool to turn down anything free," she replied. A loud thud from the floor above made her glance up. Didn't sound like the Professor was having an easy time. "We should go before she gets back down here. I don't think she'll be too happy with any of us."

Sirius was still trying to figure out what all had happened. But instead of figuring it all out he was just glad it did happen. So it was Lydia that saved my arse. I knew no girl couldn't resist helping me when they see "Sirius Black" in peril, he thought. Lydia wasn't a bad girl nor a ugly one either. But she really wasn't his type. Now that's saying something about Sirius. He may be a ladies man but he does have a type and she really wasn't it. Maybe she'd be good for James, he thought.
"I believe your right Lydia lets get out of here. Good idea James lets go to Honeyduke's." I could use a drink right about now." Sirius grabbed Lydia's hand and began to run. "Come on James!."
