I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.
- Abraham Lincoln
In the aftermath of the events surrounding the battle at Golden Gate Bridge, the X-men emerged with a bitter victory, having to face the grief and tragedy in the chaos it spawned. The patient who contained Xavier’s consciousness had gone missing, and Scott Summers and Jean Grey were dead. However, grief was not the only trial the X-men would have to confront. After losing a multimillion dollar lawsuit for destruction of property from self-made billionaire and business tycoon Francesca Rivera, the X-men found their school to be a corporate owned and funded institution. Although Ororo Monroe would be still be the school’s new headmistress, Rivera Enterprises (RE) now had authority over the Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and the X-men themselves.
Rivera Enterprises was a leading international pharmaceutical corporation that earned a controversial reputation for its line of “miracle” cures and genetic experimentation. In recent years, they had developed anti-aging medication, began marketing cloning, worked on stem cell research, and just launched designer babies. They were also the company that marketed and distributed the cure for mutation. Their next big move was to pass a bill currently in Congress requiring all babies to be injected with the cure at birth to prevent mutation, and all current school children to also be inoculated.
Meanwhile, as the sale and distribution of the cure continued, the Brotherhood had never faltered in their efforts in its destruction. They had planted explosives on ships carrying shipments of the cure, murdered top scientists involved in its production, and destroyed RE factories. Under the guidance of Magneto, who had regained his powers using the machine he used to attempt to turn all humans into mutants, the Brotherhood would stop at nothing to eradicate the cure. Thus, RE offered a deal to the X-men: if they eliminated the Brotherhood, RE would make sure the bill would not pass. If not, RE would pass the bill, along with cutting funding and injecting the cure in every student. In case the X-men refused their offer, they hired a team of mutant mercenaries called Team Alpha. So the X-men must choose . . . will they trust a corrupt corporation in order to continue the mutant gene or will they team up with the terrorist organization the Brotherhood and try to destroy the cure once and for all?
